Step One: Complete a 2021 Kenny Award Submission Application HERE
It is important to send in the application as soon as you have decided to participate. This allows Shea’s to invite you to participate in free Kenny virtual workshops, coaching, and master classes. If you need more time to choose your audition pieces you can note that on your application now, and send them in later by an email to email@example.com
Aim to have made all selections by February 28, 2021.
Step Two: Have a parent/guardian sign and submit the Shea’s Performing Arts media release and permission form. 2021 Kenny Media and Permission Forms_fillable
This release must be complete for you to participate in any virtual workshops, coaching, and classes.
You can submit for one, two, or all three categories. Only performers who submit for all three categories will be considered for the 2021 Kenny Award of Outstanding Lead Actor and Outstanding Lead Actress. While there are no requirements to submit for all three, Shea’s Arts Engagement and Education Department is here to support you in this process, and for your continued growth in the performance arts. In this time, where young artists cannot gather and perform shows, you can still hone your performance skills! We encourage you to use this time and the 2021 Kenny Awards as a platform to expand your talents and grow.
The Outstanding Lead Actor and Lead Actress winners will move on to the National High School Musical Theatre Awards (NHSMTA) – also known as the Jimmy™ Awards – where they’ll perform before industry experts from the Broadway theaters in New York City and beyond, and compete for various scholarship opportunities (www.jimmyawards.com). (Note: the 2021 Jimmy Awards will also be virtual.)
Other 2021 Kenny Award categories are:
Outstanding Acting Performance
Outstanding Dance Performance
Outstanding Vocal Performance
If you have questions about any of the above procedures, or would like clarification, please send an email to Jen Mysliwy, Arts Education Coordinator at firstname.lastname@example.org
Please read this guide and watch the tutorial video before sending in your submissions. Remember that submissions are due BY MARCH 31, 2021. Submissions that arrive after that date will not be considered for any Kenny Awards. By sending your submissions in early, it allows us to alert you that we have received your submissions and are able to view them without issue.
If you are submitting for VOICE you must upload a song that is sung by a character from a show on the qualifying role/show list HERE. The song submission can be not longer than 4 minutes and you must slate your submission with:

It you are submitting for ACTING you are encouraged to use the Shea’s Monologue Library to pick a piece from. Find the Shea’s Monologue Library HERE. No monologue submission can be longer than 90 seconds in performance time. A one minute monologue is what to aim for.
Please be advised that you CAN make make cuts to your monologue. The teaching artist’s on staff at Shea’s will be more than happy to provide guidance in making the best cuts if you pick a longer piece. If you decide to choose a monologue that is not from the library, we ask that you include the monologue, character, play title and playwright on the 2021 Kenny Award Submission Application. The deadline for adding new submissions to the Shea’s Monologue Library is January 1, 2021
If you would like to reach out for guidance on monologue choices before submitting your application I encourage you to email Jen Mysliwy at email@example.com
If your monologue choice is approved we will add it to the Shea’s Monologue Library. All ACTING submissions must include a slate at the beginning that contains:
First and Last Name
Character name and show title

Please choose ONE of the tutorials posted below and once you feel comfortable with the movement, please perform it for your 2021 Kenny Awards Dance submission. You may video it with the sound clip that is found within the tutorial, or search for the same cut of music online and use that. None of the tutorials are extremely technical by choice, but please choose the one that suits you and your style best. If you need to make modifications to fit your ability you may do so. Please add your performance flair to it, we are very excited to see your dance submissions!
